The 2020 Behr Creek Shiraz includes 3% of Viognier and is matured for 12 months in French oak. This is very good. It harnesses the Viognier, reigning in all of the sweet florals that the grape can contribute, and instead rides on the strengthening of tannic shape and drive across the palate. The Viognier uplifts the wine, it is true, but it also drives flavour further into the palate and imbues the wine with a gravitas and depth (and polish) beyond the reach of the Shiraz alone. A serious wine. Very good.

From Barossa Ranges fruit, this is a terrific Shiraz which will benefit for an extended stint in your cellar (in truth, delicious now, but if you can keep your hands off it, you won’t be disappointed in a decade or more). The fruit is handpicked, cold soaked and then undergoes a wild ferment for a ten day period. Dark crimson, there is coiled power here. Good concentration and perhaps a touch of oak, but it is extremely well integrated, such that it is effectively invisible. A lovely, finely focused and yet full of flavour style of Barossa Shiraz. Peter Schell and his team walk this tightrope with seeming ease. Chocolate, bay leaves, coffee grinds, dark berries, cherries and plums. Even a hint of vegemite. Very good length here. An exciting future ahead.
Viticulture & Winemaking
Quality in 2020 was high, but volume was reduced. Barossa’s reduced yield was due to below-average rainfall winter and spring, temperamental spring weather – and a hot, dry December and early January. Hand pick, cold soak, wild ferment, and a 10-day fermentation period.
Food Pairing
Lamb Ragu or Beef carpaccio.
